Friday After Work: Koreans Flock to Shanghai for Weekend Getaways

Benefiting from the visa-free policy, a trend of “going to Shanghai after Friday work” has emerged among South Koreans since the end of last year. Not only are Korean tourists visible everywhere in Shanghai’s business districts, bustling areas, and century-old historical sites, but department stores and restaurants also see a large influx of Koreans queuing daily to enjoy delicious food. A manager of a department store stated that restaurant employees often work until 3 or 4 AM because there are too many Korean customers, making it impossible to close the doors.

Korean Tourists Love Shanghai

The streets of Shanghai are bustling with crowds, with almost everyone busy taking photos and checking in with their phones. The latest travel trend among young South Koreans is to form groups and visit Shanghai after finishing work on Fridays.

One Korean tourist said, “I love Shanghai, it’s great to come here.” Another tourist added, “It’s very clean, magnificent, and charming. The Oriental Pearl Tower is something you can’t see in Korea, it’s spectacular.”

Popular Check-in Spots and Culinary Experiences

Korean tourists make sure to visit the former site of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea on Madang Road for check-ins and then head to the Bund to admire the Oriental Pearl Tower. Many young Koreans have also started taking wedding photos on the streets of Shanghai, praising the ancient buildings with their historical charm.

A Korean couple said, “Taking wedding photos here feels great. The scenery here has more exotic vibes than Seoul, it’s really wonderful.”

Korean tourists not only enjoy checking in at popular spots but are also keen on tasting local delicacies. Department stores and restaurants are filled with Korean tourists every day.

One Korean tourist shared, “We came for two days just to eat lamb. Yesterday we ate at Haidilao, today we went to ‘Long Ago’ BBQ restaurant. After lunch, we went to the airport.”

Restaurants Handling Peak Customer Flow

The well-known hotpot chain Haidilao has set up queue screens in Chinese, English, and Korean at the entrance of its Shanghai People’s Square location. After 10 PM, half of the customers are Koreans, and in a single night, the restaurant can serve up to 100 Korean tables.

Haidilao Shanghai People’s Square store manager Hu Xiao Zheng said, “Because there are more Korean customers now, I have learned some basic Korean, like greeting ‘hello’ and saying ‘goodbye’.”

The manager of the First Department Store Commercial Center, Qian Qian, revealed, “Employees usually work until 4 AM because we can’t close the doors. During the day, 40% to 50% of customers are Koreans, and during the late-night snack hours, Koreans make up 80% of the customers.”

Visa-free Policy Drives Tourism Boom

In November last year, mainland China announced a visa-free policy for South Korea, which boosted tourism orders, increasing by 180% compared to October last year, with an annual growth rate exceeding 40%. By significantly expanding the list of visa-free countries, mainland China successfully drove tourism revenue to increase by 11% compared to 2019, setting a historical high.
