Australia’s spice industry is set to revolutionize its market by introducing locally grown sesame, with commercial production expected to commence by 2025. For years, Australia has relied heavily on imports, with only 3% of its spices sourced domestically.
A trial led by CQ University researcher Dr. Tieneke Trotter has identified black and white sesame as promising crops alongside fennel and kalonji (Nigella seed). The project, running for four years in the Northern Territory, Western Australia, and Queensland, will soon expand to northern New South Wales.
Seed company AgriVentis Technologies holds the license for 12 sesame varieties and aims to meet the $8–10 million domestic sesame market demand. CEO Lewis Hunter foresees pricing on par with premium imports, around $2,400 per tonne. The company also plans to explore export opportunities, targeting Japan and Korea.
One of the main challenges has been the transition from “shattering” sesame varieties to non-shattering lines, which can be harvested mechanically. This innovation makes commercial production more viable.
While challenges such as pest control and planting logistics remain, a $2 million investment in a sesame research hub and increased grower interest signal strong potential for the crop’s adoption.

AgriVentis Technologies
