The Pacific region has become a diplomatic battleground of late, with the US doubling down on its Indo-Pacific strategy. There have been rising concerns over China’s security pact with the Solomon Islands.
But Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has dismissed the speculation, saying Beijing has no intention to build a military base there.
During his 10-day tour, Mr Wang will also be visiting seven other Pacific nations — Kiribati, Samoa, Fiji, Tonga, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea and Timor-Leste.
