Indonesia ban on coal exports drives up prices in China | DW

It’s the world’s biggest exporter of thermal coal. But Indonesia kicked off the year by announcing it was stopping supplies to overseas. The aim is to protect its own dwindling coal stockpile.

Indonesia exported some 400 million tons in 2020. It was the biggest overseas supplier to China’s powerhouse economy.

80% of the coal Indonesia exported last year went to just five countries – China accounted for almost half. India, the Philippines, Malaysia and South Korea make up the rest.

But now, Indonesian President Joko Widodo says coal miners, as well as liquified natural gas producers, need to prioritise domestic supply and ensure energy security at home before exporting. The ban was set to be reviewed on Wednesday.
